It is good to make your hair clean before applying hair gel for maximum results. You can wash your hair with shampoo and conditioners to keep it clean before styling.
Step 2: Condition your hair and apply hair oils before applying hair gels
This is an important step because you want to moisturize your hair before applying hair gel to it. Since kinky hair is usually coarse, you want to make sure your hair is moisturized to prevent frizz and drying up.
Leave-in conditioners help to keep your hair moisturized, but adding essential oils help to lock in the moisture. You use leave-in conditioners and oils to moisturize your hair. It is always safe to moisturize your hair before applying hair gel considering your hair texture.
Step 3: Divide your hair into sections
Since your hair is short and kinky, it is better to put it in sections before applying hair gels. Putting your hair in sections allows you to work easily without stress. Once your hair is in sections, you can easily add any other hair product of your choice.
Step 4: Use a wide tooth comb to comb out your hair
Once you have divided your hair into sections, use a wide tooth comb to comb out your hair. Using a wide tooth comb prevents breakage because the strands of your hair will easily pass through the teeth of the comb.
Combing your hair before applying gel will smoothen your hair and even out creases. You want your hair to be smooth and fine before applying gel especially if you want to sleek down your entire hair with gel.
Step 5 Start applying the gel to your hair in sections
If you want to sleek down the entire hair with hair gels to achieve a ponytail, you can start by applying some gel on each section of the hair (one section at a time).
Start applying hair gels to hair sections at the back. You can use sectioning clips to secure the sections that you are not working on. You can also use clips to secure the sections where you have applied the gel so that you don’t mix things up.
Step 6: Combine all the sections and use a brush to sleek it down
At this point, you want to combine all the sections into one if you want to achieve a ponytail. You can use your hand to put them together, and then use your hairbrush to smoothen them.
Step 7: Tie a satin or silk scarf around your head
Once you have been able to sleek down the entire hair, you can use a satin or silk scarf to keep the hair in shape and to also retain its definition.
Leave the scarf on for about 20-30 minutes for a better result.
Step 8: Use a blow dryer to reduce wetness
If you are using a water-based gel, you can use a blow dryer to reduce the wetness from the gel.
If you want to use the gel to define your edges, you can these procedures. In this case, you don’t need to put your hair in sections.
